"Templates" folder & source control

I wanted to create custom templates for our projects, so consulted the documentation:

However, the documentation seems to ignore any situation where you use a version control system such as Git or SVN and want to have your template in there.

How can I have my templates folder under source control?

I don't think your Templates folder will be any different from any other as you would add it source control, and when creating a new project you'd link to the local version of the Templates folder. (Unless I've totally oversimplified things in my head.)
