Review of Flare 4

Post by doc_guy »

Hey Flare Forum Friends -

I posted an article on my blog today which is a sneak peak at Flare 4. I did so with the permission of MadCap; I've been beta-testing Flare 4, and I asked MadCap for permission to blog about some of the new features in Flare 4, and they agreed.

Enjoy this sneak peek. Last I heard, Flare 4 is still due before the end of Summer (Northern Hemisphere's Summer, that is).... Soon we all will be able to enjoy these features and more.

What a great followup post since Blaze dude! cool
If you submit your bug feedback request here, the more likely it'll get fixed or included in a future release

Great read, I can't wait for it to be released!

I too have a list pinned to my workstation of post-publishing tasks for printed output... it would be brilliant to be throw that away! The new layout support sounds fantastic as well - it all does! :D

Nice round-up.

I've been quite impressed with v4, and I think it's a more capable and rounded product. It patches up some gaps in workflow (reporting, reviewing), makes PDFs a viable option (with direct PDF output and page layouts), and fixes a lot of annoying niggles.

Thanks for the preview, for me the Global Project Linking is the winner. I have cursed so many times having to have multiple files across our 35 projects, or having to use VSS share and shadow to get a similar result. Of course direct PDF will save us hours of work as well. I just wonder which year the end of summer release is going to be, its September 4 today and summer has long gone in the North.

Exciting stuff! I'll use that post to hopefully get an upgrade from 3.1 approved :)

Any improvements on table and image handling mechanisms? That would just about make my day.

Technically, summer doesn't end until Sept. 21 - and the weather plays it that way too, at least in some places. For example, here in the Toronto area it's the first week of school, and the weather is hotter and sunnier than it was in July / August. Not sure what it's like in San Diego where Madcap lives....
Until next time....

I installed the trial version and went to start it and I get a "The parameter is incorrect" message. I have the dotnet framework installed, and the help viewer...I don't know what to do to correct this :(

V 3.1 is still working. :|

I would recommend that you download Flare v4 again, to a new location and then attempt to reinstall, Did you install the Dot net 3.5 drivers also?

If you are still having issues then I would open a support ticket

Actually I found the issue.
But first, I have the latest framework in place as that is what we are developing off of.
Secondly, I didn't need to redownload, I had made the mistake of installing from the msi and not the exe. I just went back and started the install from the exe and it works fine. But, it was my understanding that if we maintained our maintenance plan (which we renewed) that 4 would be a free upgrade... Do we need to contact someone for a license key?

I guess it is just a matter of time for mailing those licenses out. And then there is things like spam filters who throw those messages away, because they include a link, and the email is sent to the email address on MadCap's account, which sometimes changes based on why email address you used at a particular time (I had mine reset to one address....just to get the Analyzer key sent to a different account).
