ERROR - Failed to run command 'Record'

Post by ccardimon »

This is SO not good. I was running Mimic to build a final proof-of-concept piece, and it completely failed.

What the heck does this mean and what can I do about it?

Well, something went wrong. And due to the moronic implementation of error reporting neither you nor anyone else knows what or why.

Here is what I'd do:
- try it again, if it still breaks
- reboot PC and try again, if it still breaks
- reinstall Mimic and try again, if it still breaks
- reinstall .NET runtime and try again

If it still breaks call MadCap and have them figure it out.

if you have madcap support, it might make more sense to ask them first (in case someone knows off the top of his head what the error means). in the meantime, you could try the other options until they get back to you.

Have you recorded the application your recording now before with success?
What recording options do you have set?
Exactly when does the error happen? Opening Mimic? Starting a new recording? Clicking the Record button?
Can you record a new moving using a different application?
What operating system are you running?

Not really. The video tutorial of the application is a new thing. I'm also new to Mimic.
rhollinger wrote:What recording options do you have set?
Automatic - Add callouts, Record cursor movements, Add typing box shapes
rhollinger wrote:Exactly when does the error happen? Opening Mimic? Starting a new recording? Clicking the Record button?
When I finish recording and press END.
rhollinger wrote:Can you record a new moving using a different application?
I can try. Suggestions?
rhollinger wrote:What operating system are you running?
XP

Hi there ccardimon, did you ever get a resolution to this problem?

I had exactly the same issue. Most frustrating to reach the end of your carefully scripted recording only for it to fail. I wondered if you'd have any luck before I raise an issue.

In the end I had to go back to Mimic 4 to get it to work. But then I had other problems with that too. I alternated between Mimic 4 and 5 in order to finish my work. Not ideal. The problems all seemed to be intermittent.

Thanks,
Juliette.

Juliette,

Here is what support told me:

***

Thank you for contacting MadCap Support. From one of the errors, "Out-of-memory", we have experience that one of the reasons behind the memory errors is due to the large number of BMP images in the Mimic movie files. Because these BMP files are not compressed in size and due to the large number of them being loaded at once, the memory error occurs.

Here is a tool that converts the BMP images, lets try to use the following:
A) Make a backup of the project
1. Locate the Mimic Project (.miprj) file for this project 2. Go up one level 3. Right-click on the folder you just left 4. Go to the "Send to" sub-menu 5. Select the "Compressed (zipped) folder" option 6. A ZIP file should be created and should be kept safe until you can verify this process works for your project

B) Setup the conversion tool
1. Delete the "Output" folder for your Mimic project 2. Download the .zip file available here:
http://ts.madcapsoftware.com/downloads/ ... Shapes.zip
3. Extract the executable file (.exe) inside

C) Run the conversion tool
1. Copy the exe file to the folder where the project file is located 2. Double click the exe file to run it - a cmd window will open 3. It will begin converting all the movies contained in that folder 4. When done, press any key to close the cmd window

***

They also told me this should be fixed with the next release of Mimic.

That's great! Thanks for that I'll give it a try.

Did it work for you? I don't suppose they mentioned when v6 was due did they? We had a number of niggles and intermittent issues using v5 - to the point where I'm currently looking at what Camtasia offers!

Cheers,

Juliette.

It seemed to work, yes. No indication of when the new release might come, however.

I had the same problem. When the audio is set while recording to a microphone, this error occurs. You can add the audio after the fact, when a movie exists, just not while recording.

From MadCap support:

Thanks for the call.

To resolve the "Failed to run command record" error please follow the steps below:

1. Mimic ribbon select File > Recording Options > Audio Input Source > set to (no audio).
2. Rebuild the Mimic movie.

Mimic will give this error if an audio source is selected and there is no audio source.

Had the same problem - on Mimic 6.

Seems crazy that you can't use microphone when recording - has anyone found a fix for this yet?

On Windows 7.

thanks.

I have the same problem.
when mic is enabled Mimic crashes with the error message mentioned above.

I have downloaded an express version of BB Flash back screen capturing tool and it has recorded mic and MS sound mapper with no problem.

I tried to use Mimic 7 on Windows 7 Enterprise.

Please contact Support with these issues.
https://www.madcapsoftware.com/feedback/bugs.aspx

Generally these are do to not having a patch installed. "Vista hotfix".
This generally needs to be run as an Administrator. The file is located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MadCap Software\MadCap Mimic V7\Mimic.app\Resources\Bin\WindowsMediaEncoder
Run this one first:
windowsmedia9-kb929182-intl.exe
Then run the patch:
InstallWMEVistaHotfix.exe

These are due to Mimic's dependencies to Windows Encoders
