Common variable set for multiple projects?

Post by Perrorist »

Rather than repeating the setup of common variables for every project I start, I'd like to be able to call upon one default set. Is this possible?

We do this with global project linking by creating a variable set in a "global" project that is imported into all local projects. We then overwrite the default variable definitions in the local target files. This is helpful as we have different terms for various devices that we support, but want to use "global" snippets with this variable inserted, so that we can reuse boiler plate text across all/most projects.

Thanks, Kellie. By global project, do you mean a basic project with just the information you want to be common to a number of projects? Also, how exactly is the local Variables replaced by the global variables?

(I'm very new to Flare and yet to get to grips with how it hangs together.)

Exactly! :) We store .CSS files, global snippets that contain boiler plate text, boiler plate images, master pages, page layouts, an HTML5 skin, a variable set, etc., in a global English project. In the global variable set, we have a variable that we use for device names with a default definition. We then use a Flare import file to import all of these files into a "local" project. Once imported, you can open a target file, navigate to the Variables tab and overwrite the default variable definition for that particular target. The main downfall with this approach is that you have to remember to overwrite the variable in the target files! We then use these variables within topics and snippets, without the need to duplicate this content to use a different device name.
