Lingo's on-line help topic "Basic steps for translating a project" says that the Visual Mode 'allows you to view content in its intended context and provide the translation for ALL of the text at once, rather than only in small segments (as you would in grid mode).' - with my stress on the 'all'
- yet when I swipe a number of lines of text at once (of more than one sentence) and press the Translate button only the first sentence of those selected gets translated - just as it happens in grid mode.
Does 'All' not mean all after all?
[Update] - I have now seen that I can copy a whole paragraph from the source topic into (say) BabelFish and paste the translated text back into the target topic (and seen and chose the correct paragraph option from the paste text dialog) - but when Grid mode is then attempted the dreaded 'Failed to run command 'Switch to Grid Mode', Object reference not set to an instance of an object' is displayed.

Re: How to translate more than one sentence?
our translator has encountered the message you mentioned
I reckon to post a bug report, since they do get quite responsive and will fix it up in a very near future release when sufficient ppl post about an issue

If you submit your bug feedback request here, the more likely it'll get fixed or included in a future release

Re: How to translate more than one sentence?
We are currently converting our old Word Documents to Flare and the corresponding translation via copy and paste into Lingo. If you do this in Visual mode it gets a mess, if you want to switch to Grid Mode later.[Update] - I have now seen that I can copy a whole paragraph from the source topic into (say) BabelFish and paste the translated text back into the target topic (and seen and chose the correct paragraph option from the paste text dialog) - but when Grid mode is then attempted the dreaded 'Failed to run command 'Switch to Grid Mode', Object reference not set to an instance of an object' is displayed.
In those cases I started using the Internal Text Editor to fix it manually. The most important thing to note is, that the number of tags of the form: "<MadCap:Segment> </MadCap:Segment>" in the translation must match at least the number of segments "expected" by Lingo ( or otherwise said: the number of rows in grid view). Segmentation is for western languages (Englisch, French, German ...) based on sentences. With some exceptions like abbrevations ending wit a dot ('.') . If this number matches, then Grid View will open. Then you could start moving (still editing in the editor) the segment tags, that each segment matches what you need. If you have more tags than expected, some translated segements will be missing in grid view.
There are some different "error" scenarios, but this would take too long to write down here.
The most efficient workaround in the current version is in my experience: Copy and Paste Translations in the Grid view segment by segment from the beginning. Let's hope for the next version with the better Phrase/Segemention feature.
