What happens to Footnotes when importing Word into Flare?

Is there anything special I need to do to have footnotes not be lost on importing a Word doc into Flare? Do they become pop up notes? I would appreciate any help people can offer - especially if there is a step-by-step procedure somewhere that I can follow.

They become pop-ups. Flare puts the text into the topic where the reference was and adds a span of class footnote. When a user clicks the reference, it uses javascript to pop up the footnote text.

I don't think you need to do anything special (I admit I don't use footnotes anymore), and I'm sure you can update the pop up styles as needed.
