Just wanted to put a separate thread to make this easier to find, in case anyone else comes across the same problem - don't want you wallowing in the mire for days like I did.
When the username has too many dots, importing a Word doc that contains a link to a PDF doesn't work correctly. Bug being raised, but here's the thread that gives the detail, in case you're remotely interested.

Workround: change the number of dots in the username!
