Creating Topics from Chapters

I'm dealing with legacy Word and PDF material. When I import such documents into Flare, what is the best way to convert chapters into topics? I know Flare does the first round of topic creation for you, but how much further should we go in legacy environments (if indeed we should)?

Flare breaks content into topics based on the styles in the source document. There are also options for breaking into topics based on the length of the content (I prefer not to use those options because I want more control over where exactly the breaks will be, but that's just me....) So you could go through the document before importing and apply a unique style to the first heading in each chapter.
