"This file is not an XML file"
"This file is not an XML file"
I've had this happen twice today. I open an existing file that has been used in a number of our documents, and I receive the attached message. I feel completely stuck with this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: "This file is not an XML file"
Had you previously done a global find-and-replace operation in code? If so, you may have inadvertently introduced faulty code so that the topic is no longer valid XML.
First, I'd ascertain just how many of these non-XML files are lurking in the project. On the Analysis ribbon, select More Reports > Non-XML Topics.
Second, assuming the project is in source control, I'd examine the history of a topic to see what has recently changed.
Third, I'd convert one of these non-XML topics to see what I get. Note that one can "undo" the conversion from a backup file that will have been created.

I hope these ideas point you to a solution.

Re: "This file is not an XML file"
Thanks as always for the good information. I searched for non-XML topics, and no other topics were listed. Hopefully, this was just some kind of anomaly, but if it does happen again, at least I know what to do.
