No output of variables from css to PDF

I would like to use language dependent texts in the CSS styles. So that I don't have to use a separate CSS or medium for each language, I use a variable for the corresponding text.

mc-auto-number-format: '{b}{color #d2691e}[%=CSS-Text.Tip%]{/color}{/b}';

In the target for the corresponding language I assign the text to the variable. For online output this works very well. Unfortunately it does not work for print output, although I use exactly the same style (see above).
Can anyone help me?
