Images and Source Control

How are people handling having a large number of images in their documentation without the images themselves taking up too much space in the repository?

For reference: We are using Subversion with our Flare projects. We have hundreds of images in our numerous help files and other documents we produce. I know storing binary files in source control is not really ideal space-wise, but what other options do we have? We need those files, we need to share them, and they need to be updated. Do we store them in a shared location and consider them external resources?

I am confident I am not the only one who has encountered this, but I am not sure where to begin. Help please!
