Apple and opening Word files

We have recently introduced over 100 sample foreign language files created in Word. These are contained in a folder within the Project.
With our Windows CHM. all is well and Word opens as required.
However, we are struggling to do the same for the Apple Mac version, even with MS Office for Mac installed.
Has anyone any suggestions please?
