Cannot get videos to play on iPhone from WebHelp Mobile

Post by gfevrier »

I created an m4v movie in Camtasia 7 and tried to import it into my Flare 7 project (Project > Add Multimedia), but Flare is not recognizing the format. Which video format is recommended for iPhones and the Safari browser for WebHelp Mobile?

I solved the problem by saving the video as a Quicktime movie (.mov) in Camtasia, which I could import into Flare.

I found the answer here on this post (specific answer below): https://discussions.apple.com/message/1 ... D=10881829

I actually used 480 x 640 to record and output the video in Camtasia. After I imported it into Flare (with a hyperlink from a topic), I uploaded it to our Web server. Then on my iphone, I went to the URL and clicked the link in the topic of the mobile webhelp. I tapped the double arrows on the top right of my iPhone to enlarge the video in the movie player. Looks great.

It’s actually working great now on my iPhone and iPad with the Quicktime .mov format. I no longer have to enlarge the view on my iPhone. It’s just weird that both Adobe Premiere Elements and Camtasia use m4v as output for mobile video, but you cannot import that type of file into Flare. (I've entered a support request about this.)

I recorded the video using Camtasia of the mobile app in Google Chrome at 356 x 532. In Camtasia Studio 7, I added a caption at the bottom called “Mobile Web Tutorial” in a bright gold color. (If not, it was hard to tell if you are looking at the actual app or a simulation.) The only thing I haven’t figured out how to do is to get the caption area shorter in Camtasia as it’s taking up too much screen space. I produced it as Custom, QuickTime .mov. I made sure the data rate was 900 kbits/sec. Compression type is H.264. Size is 360 x 480. Then I imported the .mov into Flare and it works fine.

Madcap Support sent me the following information. It's working fine for me with Quicktime .mov files, so it's no longer an issue.

M4V is a file container format used by Apple's iTunes application. A .m4v file is not a supported filetype to be used in a Flare project. You'll need to export your media file to a supported filetype from Camtasia if you'd like to insert it into your Flare project.

To learn more about this, please refer to the following page in Flare's online help manual:
