Life of CHM format?

Post by dtmenges »

I had heard through conversation at MadWorld 2019 that CSH in .chm files was broken. I tried it on Windows 10 with a .chm file compiled years ago and one compiled with Flare 2019 and found that CSH worked just fine in both. That said, is there any word about the life span of .chm files? It has already survived 20+ years.

"Broken", or just "not updated"? CHM is still the main delivery mechanism for help where I am, but the problem is that because it's not being actively supported by Microsoft, they're not doing anything to allow CHMs to use all the yummy functionality that is available in CSS 3, it's only CSS 2. So I reckon it'll end up dying of old age and irrelevance at some stage.

It's a sad thought. I hope they stick around for a while, though. I love CHM files.
