Browser Back button always goes back to top of page

We have recently switched from using a CHM output to HTML5, which is much better except for one thing: If you are somewhere scrolled down a page (i.e. not at the top), and you click on a link to go somewhere else, then use the browser's Back button to go back to the first page, it never remembers where you were. It always goes back to the top regardless. In the CHM it used to remember where you were, and go back there. Is there some way of fixing this?
