HTML5: Sidenav Skin and Merged Project

Post by oceanclub »

We currently can publish projects individually as online help, but there is now a requirement to merge them so search can be performed across them. I'm following the instructions in:

https://help.madcapsoftware.com/flare12 ... argets.htm

The skin I use is a tweaked version of Coronado (a Sidenav skin from https://www.madcapsoftware.com/download ... s/#sidenav).

I've set up the test merged TOC as follows:

User Guides (empty book)---+
+--User Guide 1 (link of type "Select Project and Target....")
|
+ --User Guide 2 (link of type "Select Project and Target....")
|
Developer Guides (empty book) +---Developer Guide 1 (link of type "Select Project and Target....")
|
+---Developer Guide 2 (link of type "Select Project and Target....")

... all user guides expanding out to their chapters.

I've done that and the merging worked. However, the side nav just shows:

User Guides
Developer Guides

The links to my actual content don't show up.

Any help appreciated,

Merging isn't supported in Side Nav and Top Nav. See the last note here (the last note in the topic you are using is the same, but predates Side Nav):

If I publish my online help as seperate project to the same site (say, all accessed via a shared home page of some type), can I have a search which searches across the multiple projects?

I'm not aware of anything within Flare. As best I understand, the merge defines various relationships so the scripts etc can use all the search xml/js/what-have-you files to present a consolidated search/toc/index. So without that, Flare can't do anything.

Perhaps you could look at a third party search tool like zoom search or elasticsearch, but I don't have any experience with that. (I think Flare comes with the ability to use elasticsearch as its search now, but it might be customised to work within the Flare framework; you might have to get a separate non-flare license to do what you want. BUT that's just me hypothesising.)

Hopefully someone with experience will pop in with better information.

Can anyone who is frustrated that merging is not supported in Side Nav or Top Nav please submit a feature request?

https://www.madcapsoftware.com/feedback ... quest.aspx

I requested this back in 2017 and nothing has happened yet.
Hopefully, the more requests, the higher it might rise up the list...

Feebeegeebee

P.S. Things like Elasticsearch aren't supported on Linux/UNIX, so those of us whose output is not hosted on Windows machines don't have an alternative either.

Done.

Just as a thought, could you merge your guides into one single Flare project? That's what we did for our doc set and the search therefore crawls across everything. I then created search filters to enable people to narrow their search results based on the type of task they're performing (eg, Planning, Installing, Troubleshooting, etc).
