View Output in Chrome adds double quote to URL

Post by elisa-cdk »

Several writers on our team (including me) have had the same problem, starting some time after October 1, 2020.

After we build a Flare help project, we try to display the output in the Chrome browser from our local drives.
The display fails with one of two error messages: one is a 404 error, the other is ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND.
When we look at the URL in Chrome, it has an extra double quote " at the end of the address (example: file:///C:/Users/me/Documents/My%20Projects/project1/Output/me/HTML_Online_Help/project1/Default.htm")
If we delete the double quote, the help project displays correctly.

This only seems to affect the local output. The help output is fine. It opens in IE and Firefox. It opens in Chrome after it is published on a server. So we can work around it.

But where is the double quote coming from?

A little more info:
The affected writers have Flare 2020 or Flare 2020 r2.
They all have an updated version of Google Chrome.
It doesn’t matter whether Chrome is the default browser.
It doesn't matter whether the build opens in Chrome automatically or via the View Output button.

Would be very interested about this as it has also started happening to our HTML5 help output in Chrome.

The issue is exactly as described by the orginal poster but we are currently using Flare 2018 r2.

Just to clarify, we can view the help output fine by opening Default.htm (in the output) locally. The error happens when trying to view the output via the target interface ('View Output') in Flare.

Chrome version is Version 86.0.4240.75 (Official Build) (64-bit)

My colleague just noticed that double-clicking on the output (instead of using the View Output button) will display the help output correctly from the target UI, even in Chrome.

More convenient than editing the URL all the time.

Sounds like a bug to me...

I suggest you all raise the bug (see my signature for a link) in the hope that they'll fix it quickly.

I spoke to MadCap support on an unrelated issue this week and the rep told me that this double quote issue started occurring after the release of Chrome (86.0.4240.75) earlier this month. As previous posters have said, MadCap has logged a bug and they are working on a solution.

Thanks for the posts, this issue has been so annoying for the last few months!
This issue has been fixed in Flare 2020 r3. I just installed it and it works like a charm :)
