WebHelp Search - partial matches?

Post by dprey »

Does the WebHelp output search support partial matches? When I search for part of a word in my generated WebHelp output, I don't get any results or I don't get the results I expect. This issue occurs with words that are made up of other words, such as AllocateDealCommitments and TransactionMakerChecker. My project contains a number of words like this which represent database parameters.

For example, I want to find a topic that contains “AllocateDealCommitments”. If I search for “DealCommitments” or “AllocateDeal”, it does not return any results but if I search for “AllocateDealCommitments”, the correct topic is returned.

If I want to find "TransactionMakerChecker" and I search for "MakerChecker" and "TransactionMaker", no results are returned. When I search for "Maker", I get topics that contain only the word "Maker", not "Maker" as part of another word. When I search for the whole word, "TransactionMakerChecker", the correct topic is returned.

Can I somehow tweak the search to return partial matches?

Best regards, Dawn

AFAIK the WebHelp search accepts the typical placeholders. The asterisk is for any amount of characters and the ? is for a single character. So searching for "*Deal*" should return anything that has "Deal" in it.

Thanks for the suggestion Ramon. I tried using the asterisk to search for *deal and *commitments and still didn't get the results I expected. I also found a topic in the Knowledge Base listing the Boolean variables that work for WebHelp but * and ? weren't in the list.

Then I apologize for the comment, I must have remembered it wrong. In that case I think asking for it to be included in a future version is OK. You can add feature requests here: https://www.madcapsoftware.com/bugs/submit.aspx

No worries - I didn't think to search for the placeholders that were supported until you mentioned it. :)

I'll definitely submit this as an enhancement request.

i'm also submitting a feature request/bug for partial matches in webhelp search.

in my help, i have the words "termination" and "terminal".
--searching for "term" finds nothing.
--searching for "termin" finds both.
--searching for "termina" finds nothing.
--searching for "terminal" finds both (even though "terminal" is not in the word "termination")

i don't understand why search should be such an issue that hasn't been fixed with all these years of feature requests. or maybe it has and this is the result? if so, it doesn't work for me!

You will see the source of the problem, if you look at the properties of the depicted topic ... see also: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 130#p78130
=>
I simply don't know what that search does ... if we're lucky somebody at MadCap does ...
