Cross-reference to heading lower in another topic?

Post by stephgl »

Hi all,

I've been using cross-references to make links to topics where that topics first heading is the text I want in the paragraph where the link originates. Sometimes I need the link to say, and go to, a heading farther down in a topic. I have been just typing in the text and using a hyperlink, but this doesn't drop me where I want to be in the linked topic.

When I look at my cross-reference options and choose Open Topic, then Bookmarks, it does give me the list of headings in the destination topic. However, it does not bring up that lower-level heading text into the link in my paragraph the way a regular cross-reference does.

What's the best practice to use here? I imagine I'm going to get myself in trouble trying to use hyperlinks and cross-references so similarly. I'm used to Word where it was no sweat to make automatic cross-references to any heading level. Do I need to get the bookmarks involved?

Yea, you'd need bookmarks, otherwise the browser has no clue where to scroll to on the page. Would be nice if it could do that to any element on the page, but I guess that would have other negative effects that I don't know about.

Even when you insert a xref to a heading on a page, Flare automatically inserts a bookmark tag at that point so that the xref will work. But you could have numerous tags in a topic and that could be a lot to scroll through in the xref screen to pick the content you want, especially if there's a table in the topic and how do you differentiate multiple paragraphs from each other unless it shows the first few words and that would make the list really long. So Flare only shows headings and bookmarks.
