"Specified path, file name or both too long" for NetHelp

Post by rkossik »

I have successfully built a NetHelp target before (several years ago; probably pre version 6). Now when I try to build it I get "The specified path, file name or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters". It then list the name of the word document and nothing more. the NetHelp builds, but the various styles are not applied correctly (indicating that the build really did not succeed). I have no idea how to trouble shoot as certainly none of my topic headings are 248 characters (and it simply lists the name of the document (which has many topics). Any ideas?

Figured it out. The path to where my project was located was too deep. By shortening some of the directory names, I was able to make the problem go away. I think this is a limitation of the Windows file system.
