Combine two TM files?

Post by EileenP »

Is it possible to combine two translation memory files (*.db)? I can't find it documented anywhere....
Thanks.

I believe that is what Export TMX and Import TMX (on the Translate tab) does. If I understand the Help, you can export one file and import it into the other. If it were me, I'd export both and import into a third, just to be safe.

You mean Import TMX and Export to TMX? On the Resources tab?

TMX files are Translation Memory eXchange (TMX) files from tools such as Trados and memoQ. That's not what I want to do. I want to combine two Lingo translation memories.

And I'd also like to be able to go through them manually and delete old junk.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

That's true, but you can use them to merge two Lingo DBs.

Here's a sort-of-stilted procedure:

1. Edit an existing Translation Memory in Lingo.
2. In the Translation Memory Editor pane, on the toolbar, select the Export translation memory to TMX button.
3. Choose and edit another Translation Memory in Lingo.
4. In the Translation Memory Editor pane, select the Import translation memory from TMX button.
5. Select the TMX you created in Step 2.

After importing the TM in this way, you can use the built-in tools to clean up any matches, or go through manually and delete segments in the editor. This is the best way I could figure out to merge Lingo dbs, short of using a third-party utility.

Ok, thank you, that worked -- maybe.

After making backups of everything, I exported each of my TMs, 52 MB and 10 MB, to TMX files.

When I imported the larger TMX into the 10 MB TM, I ended up with 94 MB.

I thought that was fishy so I tried the opposite -- imported the smaller TMX into the 52 MB TM. This time I ended up with 55 MB.

The sizes don't add up at all, and that makes me deeply distrustful that the process was actually successful. What do you think?

Thank you!

Use Edit TM for one of them and see what it looks like.
