Installation Guides in HTML5 Instead of PDF?

Post by rhetoric101 »

Do any of you have experience creating an installation guide using HTML5 Top-Nav Help instead of a PDF? I'm wondering how I could present a huge sequential process such as an installation guide by using Help instead of a PDF. If any of you have tried this, how do you keep users on the straight-and-narrow so they follow the steps and do not jump around the document?

I ran across some examples of installation guides in web pages:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation ... ion_Guide/
https://www.drupal.org/documentation/install

Each has a method of displaying the table of contents on each page so users don't get lost. The Redhat guide has "Previous" and "Next" buttons at the bottom of each topic, which keeps users on track.

Have any of you tried something like this with HTML5 Help? Perhaps the splash screen could have the initial table of contents for the installation guide?

The slide-out menu in HTML 5 does not reveal all levels of the TOC at once, so it could be a bit of a treasure hunt for users. Perhaps some of you use other tricks for keeping a visible table of contents on each page?
