How do i set the default HTML5 skin - that is, the skin that is considered the "(default)" value in General > Skin for a HTML5 target?

I don't think you can explicitly set a flag on a skin to make it the default. I think the default skin is the skin that appears first in the list of skins when sorted alphabetically A-Z. You can rename the skin that you want to be considered default so that it appears at the top of the list.

Hi Tom,

My skin already appears at the top of the list so should be the default already, but isn't..

In your Target, under the Skin tab, you set the default for general and component skins.
If you make that Target your primary, then that is how you will see things you are working on in the XML Editor.

Slightly off the original question, but what bits uses the component default skins? I'm playing with HTML5 output and have set the menu skin defined here to have hideous background colours, but I can't see these bits being used anywhere in my output. Am I overcomplicating things?

I think the XML editor can only pick up general items from the skin - not tried colours, the project I'm currently working on has a white backdrop!
If you preview a topic as the target, once it has a default skin set, it is mostly there (eg the component skins required by master page come into effect).
I don't think you ever see 100% of the skin styling until you publish.

Cancel that request, I've worked out where a menu skin is used - the reason I couldn't see any evidence of it is that I don't have that kind of menu included in my project!
