so.. i looked this up in online help.. here's what it stated:
From the grid in the bottom portion of the editor, find and select the body tag.
In the local toolbar, click Add Class.
The New Style dialog opens.
Enter a name for the new style class and click OK.
The new class is added under the <body> tag.
i then applied the new tag (body.SHADEDtopic) to the topic... and it did just what i wanted it to do... it shaded the entire topic background as a lite blue... HOWEVER.. in the preview and built project, the topic still appears with a white background...
WHY? any ideas?

Are you using a Master Page? I haven't done this in a while, but it's possible if you have a different style for your master page than you do for your topic, the master page background might "win".
