Publishing Destinations v Output Folders

This forum is for all Flare issues related to the Microsoft HTML Help target.
This target produces "CHM" files in the output.

Publishing Destinations v Output Folders

Post by rmdavidson »

This is my 4th day with Flare and thus far all I had seen/read was information about Destinations. Now that I created a CHM output I found that there is also an Output folder, which is different than the Destination. Why is this? What's the difference between a publishing destination and this output folder?
When you build a target, Flare creates output files and places them in a folder named after the target, which is stored in a subfolder of your project called "Output." For example, let's say your project is stored here: C:\MyProject. In that case, after you generate output, the files would be stored here:

C:\MyProject\Output\MyName\TargetName

The Output folders are stored (by default) in the same directory structure as the original content/flare file. The Publishing Destination is for when you want to put just the final generated output files in another location IN ADDITION TO the default output location. for example, I have a bunch of flare projects stored in my local C: My Documents directory (flare works faster when worked locally vs on a network, by the way). i generate all the time to see how a project is going to look. when i am ready to let other people at my company see my work, i publish to a network folder that everyone has access to. everyone does not need my flare project files, and i don't want them to have access to them, but they can have access to my generated output files (because it is very difficult/impossible to make changes to them unless you know what you're doing). i can publish my content anywhere i want - some people even publish to an ftp site to upload to the internet (i haven't been able to get this work, but it is possible) - but keep my original files safe on my local drive.

by the way, welcome to flare and the forums!

lacastle,

One thing I don't get is it went to both my local and network folders and the Output folder copy on my local drive works, but the one on the network drive doesn't. It tells me to try typing the URL again. Should it not work in both or have I been away from a network so long I've forgotten more than I realized...? That and I'm still readjusting to getting up at 6 AM and commuting an hour. :-)

I didn't think so, but I had to ask. This is my first CHM since 2003. We also produce MC WebHelp it seems. I think the CHM is going away for us eventually.

Just to clarify, the bit about CHMs not working on network drives is a Windows security decision implemented a few years ago and not a result of anything MadCap did or didn't do.
