Padding vs Margins...difference?

General question: What is the difference between padding and margins in the stylesheet editor? I never know which one to change.

Basically, margin is spacing outside the element, padding is spacing inside the element.

Thanks for the tip! I was able to adjust the spacing between my bullet list and the preceeding sentence by changing the margin setting rather than the padding.
