Unresolved Links in Word generation.

Post by Techno »

This has been driving me nuts for days now. I have six errors similar to the following, and unless I am missreading something, the errors don't tell me what file in my Word compilation it is looking for. I've tried all manner of searches, but.....

Does anyone have any suggestions?

George.

Unresolved link to file: C:\DBT Help\Content\the_menus\MENU_GLOBAL\global_Embosser_setup_transend_se.htm. File may not be included in the output.

It's looking for global_Embosser_setup_transend_se.htm. Either the file is missing or you have it conditioned to not be included in the output, or the file isn't in the TOC, which is what print outputs use to determine what topics to include in the output.

Lisa, I feel a right idiot here. But then again, I do rather see it as a software flaw, or shall we say "missinformation".

Essentially I was describing 4 dialog tabs, each of which is covered in it's own Topic.

What I had done within each topic was to create Hyperlinks to the others. BUT, I had eroniously linked each of the four Topics to itself.

Obviously (now I see it) you can't do this, and Flare wasn't clever enough to warn me at the time the Hyperlink was created.

And I will confess that I had to call Flare tech suppport to find this out.

Well, you can, and there are instances where you want to. Generally, though, you're linking back to the same topic but going to a bookmark in the topic. Say, adding a "Back to Top" link at the bottom of the topic -- you're linking back to the topic, but to either a bookmark or using JavaScript to get back to the top. Or you might want a mini-TOC-like effect on the top right of the topic with links to the subheadings in the topic, kind of a "What's in this Topic" section so the user can jump directly to a subheading. Both those examples are more for online outputs, although the "What's in this Topic" could conceivably be used in print output, so long as the links remain.

So there are valid reasons to link back to a topic.

True, but I wasn't linking to a Bookmark or such like, simply the file itself.

Yeah, probably not much reason to do that, unless you like running in circles. :P
