Flare 8 Update

Post by Techno »

:feedback: My goodness - what a pleasant surprise so far. :D The latest update to Flare V8 has it opening VERY quickly. I was told through the week by tech. support that they were aware of memory issues.

Hi,

... but it would be nice if the update installation had a box stating that it finished updating and if a restart is required or not. "You might experience a delay..." in the shown dialog does not indicate if the delay is 5 minutes or maybe x hours... .

Greetings, Rene Severens

My update when so fast that I never saw a dialog saying there might be a delay. It did, however, make me enter my license information and register all over again.

Nice, but I wish the update hadn't quashed my Quick Access bar. I had to rebuild it.

Huh, seems like my update definately failed then. I ran it twice, because I thought it might have failed when I didn't see any kind of confirmation/done dialog box. But the Windows Unistall or Change a program screen still lists it as version 8.0.0 and nothing seems to have changed.

Guess I'll re-download and try again.

EDIT - Well, maybe it DID update. Because Flare says it's version 8.1 They just failed up update the version for Windows. Huh.

The update exchanges a bunch of files in the Flare application directory rather than run a complete reinstall. The file swap is much quicker and the download is much smaller. I agree, would be nice to have it report when it is done, but I guess once the extract dialog closes all work is done.

Has anyone found release notes, or is this a stealth upgrade?

Release notes are always posted to the Knowledge Base: http://kb.madcapsoftware.com/.

Search for article GEN1035F. (Sorry, don't know how to easily grab the URL to that exact article else I'd have provided that.) You'll also find it listed on the TOC under "Most Recent Articles."

I think part of it is it depends a lot on your hardware. My current computer is screaming fast with a quad core, solid-state drive, and 8GB of memory. The installation seemed very quick to me. When I tried to run it on my home computer, it was MUCH slower. So it is hard to estimate the time when a lot depends on the computer that is being installed on.

I recognize at least three of those issues being fixed as one's I opened (and I need to check on two others, but I also think I reported those). Glad to see that some of the issues I've reported have finally been fixed. For a while it seemed I had a lot of open tickets with little results. ;)

In FF you can right-click on the content frame -> This frame -> View frame info and the direct URL will appear under the address.

In Chrome right-click on the content frame -> View frame info.

Cheers.

First Flare launch of the day still took 40 seconds; the next one took 7 seconds. Big deal!

And Madcap folks, it's not nice to delete my Quick Access Bar items!

Agreed. My Quick Access Bar items were removed, too. Not happy about that.

Interesting. Mine didn't disappear. I have my Quick Access Bar positioned beneath the ribbon, not above it. Perhaps that had something to do with it. Is your QAB above or below the ribbon?

Well, the only other thing I can think of (other than a difference in OS -- I'm running XP) is that the issue was addressed in the download file before I downloaded and installed it. I downloaded the file last night and installed it this morning, although as I look at the file's dates, it says it was modified 3/5/12, which was before it was released, so that probably wasn't it either. So maybe the OS is the reason. Are you guys running Windows 7?

And so we have yet another update. I have to say though, that it is nice to be presented with a basic list of what is in the update this time. Shows that someone is listening :-)
