Why is the Nav Pane appearing in CSH topics?

I am using the correct syntax as described in http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... lopers.htm

to call Webhelp CSH from our product:
For examle, the URL call is https://company.com/directory/default_C ... e.htm|Skin

In the skin, I chose the Hide Navigation Pane pane on startup option. Plus I cleared all the check boxes for the TOC, Index, Search etc. Yet, when I use the URL, the help topics opens with a blank navigation pane, despite the fact that the skin says no nav pane.
The CSH help topic also opens with the option to leave a comment even though comments allowed are specified in the main Webhelp content, but not in the CSH skin.

What am i missing? How do I make the nav pane not appear in my CSH topics?

I'm using Flare8 and our topics our target is WebHelp.

You're using the correct CSH format in your URL, so it should work.

Note that the navigation pane will appear initially whilst WebHelp is being loaded, but it should disappear when it is finished. In the case of IE, it may be also visible when security warning messages are displayed.

Since you're saying it's a blank navigation pane, that suggests it's using a skin that has the TOC/search/Index disabled.

Also, I'd check the target Advanced tab, that Generate all skins is selected.


With regards to the comments; that isn't a skin setting, it's a target setting, so it will always be present in that target's output whatever skin you use.

The Nav Pane is still appearing in our CSH topics. I checked the Advanced tab in our two targets. Generate all skins is selected. I deleted targets that I'd created for the CSH, I've checked the skins, and still the nav pane appears. Two of our skins should and do have a nav pane, but the skins for the CSH do not have nav panes, so continue to be flummoxed about why we're getting an empty nav pane.

Does the CSH call specify the correct skin? Which request does the server get?

And have you tried with different browsers? And with different browser versions?

Yes, the path/syntax includes the correct name of the skin. I'm not sure what you are mean when you ask about the server.

I have also tried the path/syntax in different browsers. The browser window opens with the Nav Pane.

I meant when you look at the sever logs, does it show that the client (the application) sent the correct request? It could be that the request gets truncated somehow. If that checks out fine, you need to look at the help project.

Check what Dave suggested earlier....the only other idea I have is to remove all files on the server and publish an entirely fresh set of files. Maybe something old got not updated properly. You may also want to try to clear the cache in the browser you use. If none of that helps I am out of ideas.

The nav pane and its content is heavily packed with javascript ... maybe it's security settings of your firewall or Windows ... if it's real online help: Ever tried from a completely different location like an internet café?

Conrad, from MadCap Technical Support shared the following workaround with me.

"... please select one of the Features in the General tab of the skin file. "

Of course, the Hide Navigation Pane on Startup check box must also be selected.

- I know a similar phenomenon from HTML Help and thought it's "system-immanent" for HTML Help only.
Wouldn't have thought it's relevant for WebHelp & Co., too ...
