How can I redirect one topic to another

Post by Charlie »

I'm using CSH in WebHelp, and have two different spots in the application that have the exact same help. Initially there was no problem because I had two different topics that used a single snippet to supply the content for both topics. The problem comes in with synching the TOC. Unless I put both topics in the TOC (they would be one following the other) when I open one topic, the TOC synchs, the other doesn't.

I was thinking of redirecting the topic that doesn't synch to the one that does in order to sync the TOC regardless of which component called the help. Any ideas?

Why do you have two topics following each other if they're the same content? Or is one the last topic in Book A and the other is a standalone topic immediately after Book A? I usually do the two topic files with the same snippet inserted in both so that I can put one topic in one book and another topic in another book, but one may be one level deep and the other two levels deep, so you're not as apt to seem them both at the same time. They definitely don't follow one right after the other. So why do you have the two topics appearing one right after the other?

Currently, I don't have both topics in the TOC, but in order to make the TOC sync, regardless of the spot in the app from where the CSH is called, both would have to be in the TOC and the organization of the TOC and app is such that they would follow one another...

If I could have one of the topics redirect to the other when accessed by CSH then only the topic with content would be in the TOC and the TOC should sync to that topic.

Could you not make both CSH calls link to the same topic?

If you use an alias file for your CSH, then you can easily link the two separate identifiers to the same topic.
Admittedly it's more hassle if you're not using an alias file, if the link is to the topic filename then it'd probably mean changing the CSH call in the application.

Thanks for the help! I guess the best approach is to have the CSH calls go to a single topic. Unfortunately, I'm not using an alias file - would be nice!!

You don't need an alias file to use CSH. You can make the call to the topic using its filename.
