Inserted image is not being displayed in the topic

One of my pictures was not being displayed within a topic. I have tried saving it as a different type of file, etc. It still will not show up in the topic. I added it to the project again and relinked it. I still can't see it. Has anyone else encountered this?

What format are you using for the image? Make sure it's a web format, like JPG, PNG, or GIF.

Is it not showing up in Flare's XML Editor? Or do you mean in the output? Or both? What output are you using (PDF, HTML Help, WebHelp, etc.)?

What about the other questions? Are you just not seeing it in the output, or are you not seeing it in the XML Editor either?

This is strange. I just generated output again, and now none of the images are being displayed in the WebHelp output. They worked last week. I saw an error message during the build progress that said, "Resolving links in output files."

Are the image links relative (i.e., when you look at the code, do they point to images by something like ../Resources/Images/myPicture.png)?

Yes. All the images appear to be linked in the project. I checked code in the internal text editor and I can see paths to the appropriate image file names. I upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 the other day. I wouldn't think this is causing the problem. However, I can't think of anything I've done differently that would cause these images not to appear in the output or XML Editor previews.

Try clicking on the compatibility mode button in IE8 - that may do it.

If this wasn't a problem before the IE8 upgrade, I can only assume that was what caused it. However, at least in my case, I can see pictures in my webhelp even if I turn off compatibility mode.

You could try to have someone else test your webhelp (someone who doesn't have IE8).

If you create a new project from scratch and add one image to it, does that output display correctly?

I created a new project about an hour ago and the images in that one also did not display. I searched the Web for IE 8 troubleshooting tips. I then installed the latest Windows security updates. After doing that, I created another project from scratch. The images showed up in the output! Yay. However, I opened some old projects after installing the security updates, and the images did not display in the output. I am now beginning to wonder if the .css file I associated with those projects is creating the image issue. I noticed that I did not associate a .css file with the new project that showed the images... I will continue to test and keep you posted.

Thanks, all, for your suggestions and patience. I have confirmed that the .css file that I previously associated to my original projects is not compatible with IE 8 for some reason. That .css file was fine when I opened output from the same projects last week when I still had IE 6. I have imported a few FrameMaker files into Flare this afternoon and didn't navigate to a .css file. The images are displaying in the XML Editor and output.

When you say "it doesn't show the images" -- what exactly do you mean? Do you see a big red X in the output? Is there simply a big, image-sized blank space? No space at all, and no image?

Take a look at all the img classes in your stylesheet, and all the blank selector classes, if you have any (classes that start with a ., but no element like p or img). One might be set to display: none, or have other properties causing the problem.

You could also post your stylesheet here, and perhaps one of us will spot the problem, or be able to reproduce the error, at least.

Instead of an image being displayed, the output shows a tiny white square with black borders. I've attached a screen shot of output. An image is supposed to appear under the "Peers List Screen Options" link.

I tried to upload the .css file to this thread, but I received an error message that I can't upload a file with a .css extension. Thanks for offering to look at it, though.

Andrew, thanks for telling me to look at those style classes! I just compared the img style class properties in my old .css to the .css that was created by default after I created a new project. The old .css file had the height and width set to 1 px under the Box property! I don't know why or when I changed that. Anyway, I changed those properties back to the default/not set option and saved the project. The images are now displayed in the XML Editor and output.

For future reference, you can probably copy / paste your CSS file (as long as it's not HUGE) to a topic by using the CODE tags. Just click the Code button in the post editor and paste your CSS text between the

Code: Select all

 tags that appear.
