Word Count?

Post by Nina Esile »

Can anyone tell me if Flare has a feature that lets me count all the words in an entire project?

Fun, I know. :)

Yes, it does. On the Project tab, open or create a new report. Enable the Statistics box, and generate your report. One of the stats is word count.

It works then? I've never seen the word count say anything other than zero! (in reports or Analyzer)

Works for me. We've got over a million words in one of our projects. :P

I'm looking at one with 2346 topics, 59700 segments; and apparently, 0 words.

It's a good job I don't get paid by the word!

That's an impressive feat! Flare must think your manual is a bunch of unrelated characters. :P

Deleting the Analyzer folder and rescanning worked (although I'm sure it never did for v3 or v4); a rather modest half million.

I just found the word count feature. It's like a brand new toy to play with :)

That is unfortunately the fix for far too many Analyzer problems. Or, rather, there are far too many Analyzer problems. I have to delete the folder every other week.

analyzer works great for us so far.
If you submit your bug feedback request here, the more likely it'll get fixed or included in a future release

I don't actually have the Analyzer product -- I have the built-in version in Flare. It works great for my smaller projects, but for my big ol' many-thousand-topic monster, it's glacially slow and I have to delete the Analyzer folder every other week so I can properly use it to check on conditions, etc. Also, it frequently reports broken links where there are no broken links. Perhaps it's a problem with my project, but I don't see how.

Both Analyzer and Flare use the same database; Flare's Project Analysis pane just shows you a tiny subset of what's in Analyzer.

I've also had problems with false reporting of broken links, which is fixed by deleting the database. It'll occur every 2-3 months.
Analyzer seems to freeze and crash quite a lot (e.g. 1 in 5 times), which is probably where the corruption comes from.

Yeah, I have a bug report in because Analyzer keeps flagging broken links to files that have really long <pre> </pre> sections in them. The first time I noticed it, I dutifully went in and "fixed" the links. Analyzer was happy....for about 5 minutes. Then it started reporting the "broken links" again. <sigh> Even deleting the Analyzer folder did no good. At least it was reproducible so when the customer support person tried it locally, he was able to realize it was a bug.

Hi all. Am wondering if the Statistics report worked in previous versions of Flare and doesn't work in V8, because I just ran the report (it took 15 minutes) and it says, "(No data)" which just can't be true.

I tried running the report a couple of times, and have tried deleting the Analyzer folder, and then running the report again too, but to no avail.

Any advice? I really need a word count. My project is probably on the large side (3,117 items in the Content folder), so maybe it's just too big for Flare to handle a word count?

Mishou6779, I just ran into this problem. Try running the report again after you get the No Data message. It refreshed almost immediately for me on the second generate.

(I've previously tried deleting the Analyzer, Output and Source Control folders, but hadn't tried doing 2 generates in a row.)
