Rename .flprj File

Post by jblackwood »

We sometimes have two ro three projects going at the same time in Flare. They are for different versions of the same software. It is hard to tell them apart if more than one instance of Flare is open with a different project in each, because the .flprj file has the same name which is what you see in the title bar. Can I change the name of the .flprj to more easily identify each project?

Thanks!

Yep, you can change it, it doesn't matter to the project itself.

Obviously take into consideration if the name is linked to elsewhere, e.g. if it's used in a project merge or import.

Thanks, Dave. Our projects are imported into Flare from TFS. Does that mean we can't rename the .flprj? If we can what all do we have to do to make sure everything stays in line?

The problem that you will have, if your project is bound to source control, is that you need to make the file name change using whatever method is provided by your source control software.

I use SVN, and I have TortoiseSVN installed on my computer. To change a filename, I have to use the SVN rename command so that the name change is recognized by the source control system.

If you just change the name of the file in Windows, but not using the method required by your source control system, then when you check the file into your source control system, you will have two versions of the file. One with the new name and one with the old name, both on the repository. You then would have to go to your repository and delete the old name, or somebody else who checks out your project will get both .flprj files.

I have a colleague who reported having trouble renaming a .flprj file because the system wanted the old one for some reason. I didn't investigate to find out the problem, but that makes me want to warn you to make a back-up of your project (or check all changes in to the source control system) before you try something like this, to ensure you can restore it to today's point if things d0on't work like you hope.

Thanks for the info! I may test it. If I do, I will post that result.
