Custom TOC icons in HTML Help

Hello everyone
I would like to use custom TOC icons in my HTML Help and thought it was not possible until I found some articles on the net talking about workarounds. However the info I have gathered so far :

I need to create an image strip, which I have done, and declare it somewhere, which I am not sure of where, and I would like to understand how the whole thing works.
I would be very grateful if someone who has implemented this successfully was kind enough to share their knowledge or at least give me some pointers.
