WebHelp includes all topics, not just the ones in the TOC

Post by Cinnamon »

Hi there
I have a big Flare project which includes all the files for our five applications which each cover one part of the user's workflow.
We're moving from CHM to WebHelp and I've noticed that even though I thought I was generating WebHelp for each application, the outputs include information for all the applications.
Will I have to apply conditions to make sure I don't get the topics for the other applications or can I restrict the WebHelp content to the files in the TOC?
Thanks

You have to condition out the unwanted topics for help outputs. I'd suggest that every topic needs at least one condition unless you want it to appear in every help target.

Thanks Paul
I've just got so many condtions already set - it's getting difficult to see all the stripes!
I've added my 'stripe' problems to MadCap's enhancement list. So hopefully there will be an easier way to see what I'm doing in the future.
Thanks again.

FYI, CHM behaves the same way -- so your CHMs also include all topics if you haven't excluded them with conditions.

A quick tip - if you keep groups of topics in separate folders (e.g. one for each application), then you just need to apply the condition to the folder. It might be easier than applying conditions to every individual topic.

We've had problems conditioning topics, resulting in topics missing from output or included where they should not be. Using the GUI interface, the multiple conditions did not always save properly. Some conditions edits would save, but not all of them. I found sometimes I had to select the conditions three times to get the proper ones saved. Instead, I found it easier to check and manage conditions with the text editor. I reported this issue to Flare some time back, but it is still an open issue.

Interesting...I've never seen that issue, and we do a lot of conditions work (though rarely more than 1-2 per topic). Our targets have well over 100 conditions in them.

This KB article kind of touches on the issue.

I have about 15 items in the condition tag set (and growing as we add new products). Some topics have up to 12 conditions set at the topic level. I started noticing topics being dropped from the output or topics not being properly excluded after I tried to remove conditions. On these topics, I've found if I set conditions via the GUI, I may have to edit the list as many as three times to get all conditions properly applied. I've never noticed an issue with just adding one condition to the topic, but when adding (or removing) several.

That sounds like a defect to me.

If A Topic is set to more than one Condition, and Include will always over ride an Exclude.
