Special characters wrong in TOC and Index

Post by Heike K »

Hello,
I tested Flare with some translated texts, including czech, russian and polish.
The contents of the topics looks good, whereas there are several problems in the generated TOC and Index. The russian entries only consist of ?????, some of the czech and polish special characters are wrong.
Are there any settings I have to change to produce the special characters?

Thanks
Heike K.

Hi,

I am working on a German OS. Good idea - I will ask our translation department to test it on a respective OS.
You'll hear from me ...

The HTML Help viewer can be very Language Specific, if you test build webhelp output does it look ok?

HTML Help is very specific to its environment.
Be sure in the Flare project, you have the language settings set correctly in the Target file which tell the compiler how to proceed.

Hi there,
I got it. I set the Project Properties and the Target language to the right language and now it looks fine.

Does anyone know about the error message during compilation "No language skin file available for language ‚xx‘"?

What consequences does it have?

Thanks

For one thing, some features won't be translated, as the text for them is kept in the language skin. Things like breadcrumbs text, context-sensitive cross-references (e.g., "on the next page"), related concepts text, etc.

Some of those formats have been moved to the project skin in Flare v6 (or was it v5?), so for earlier versions of Flare you'd definitely have to include a language file if you're using any of the features that call to info in the language skin. On the other hand, the language skin in v6 still has those formats, so even if you set them in the skin in v6, you might have to include the language skin. I didn't have to in a quick test, but I was only generating English output on an English machine. But it would be kind of annoying in v6 if you could set the formats in the skin but still have to create a language skin, especially since modifications made in the project skin don't seem to carry over to the language skin.

Anyway, you create a language skin for the project by going to Tools > Manage Language Skins, then selecting the language you want.

Has this functionality been reversed in Flare 9, i.e. special characters right in TOC and Index? I'm building Czech html (chm) help and in the main display window all special characters are replaced by placeholders. Funnily enough in the Contents and Index pane these characters are displayed correctly. Luckily I still have Flare 6 on my machine so I was able to generate a help file without placeholders in the main pane. Do I need to change a setting in Flare 9 or is this a bug?
