Problems running Flare on Mac

Post by Ron T »

Anyone out there having success with Flare 5 or 6 under Parallels? VMWare Fusion? Boot Camp?
I've installed Parallels 5 on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.2. Under Parallels I have Windows 7 and Flare 6.
When I make a change to a style sheet (for example, the font for h1), the change shows up in the stylesheet editor preview but the text in the doc itself does not reflect the change. Flare 5.1 had the same problem. On the advice of Parallels tech support, have updated Parallels/Parallels tools and reinstalled Flare; no change. MadCap tech support has had no suggestions so far.

The style change doesn't appear in the XML Editor or Preview, or it doesn't show up in the output either?

The change is visible in the stylesheet editor preview. When I save the stylesheet change and then view the doc window, the doc has not changed.

Still not sure if you mean the Preview window or the actual generated output. What kind of output are you generating, by the way?

Sorry that I haven't got a solution to offer, but I'll answer the original question. I use Flare 6 (and prior to that Flare 5 and Flare 4.2) on Windows Vista via Boot Camp on an iMac running Leopard. I've had no problems installing and running Flare on this platform.

RETIRED, but still fond of all the Flare friends I've made. See you around now and then!

I'm running Flare (5 and 6) on multiple platforms (MacBook Pro with 10.5, Mac Pro Quad with 10.6), both using Fusion and XP (one Pro, one Home) -- Also a real Dell at work with XP. The Fusion versions operate correctly for me. I wonder if this is a Parallels problem. It shouldn't be, but you never know. Do you have a way to test in another environment (either real Windows hardware, or Boot Camp)?

Hi there

So I've installed Parallels and Flare just fine, opens up and all. However, I copied the Project files (whole folder) as I need to move between home (Mac) and office. When I point to the *.flprj file it brings up a Copy to Project dialog - "The file is not within a project. To open, select a project to copy it to."

"Some library features are unavailable due to unsupported library locations" appeared in the top of the window before I selected this file as well.

I copied it to the top-level C: drive and it works, but I'd like to know if there are win7 features I'll have to worry about with Flare.

Any help appreciated, thx

I'm doing the same thing (OS X 10.6, Parallels 5, Win 7, Flare 6) and also received the error: "This file is not within a project. To open it, select a project to copy it to." On your advice, I copied the whole project folder to top-level C drive and it opened just fine. I just switched to this setup (previously used a Win XP desktop) so I have the same request - are there other weirdness using Flare this way? I also use Capture, Feedback Server, and Analyzer. Thanks!

Hi there
I finally have things working, far as I can tell :)
Under Devices > Network Adapter in configuration, I'm using Bridged Networking > Default Adapter.

This seems to allow me to see Mac folders, tho took a bit to find them. Using Shared Profile caused troubles, but could have been Flare got confused when I changed it, as the Project was at C: level. I can't find the windoze stuff from the mac, but once I could access Mac folders from win that was fine for sharing/passing files.

Then if I want to use the Mac's VPN (doesn't seem to be automatic, but I think there are some weirdnesses with our vpn so not sure the cause), I open Network and Sharing and choose Connect to a network and select the VPN.

Hope any of this helps, it's working great but did take some fiddling.
