Screenshots enlarged in PDF Output

Post by zwart »

I've tried to read the topics, but have had no success in solving my graphics issue.

My screenshots are at the most 600px wide at 96dpi. When I take a screenshot of them using Snagit (with no filters or effects) and place them in Flare, everything looks great on the screen. But when I generate the PDF, all my screenshots are being expanded to fit the width of the page (730-something pixels). I thought it would be easy to figure out, but I have had no luck thus far. Any ideas?

Sounds like you might have a width or min-width setting specified in the stylesheet (most likely in the print medium) for the img tag or class of the img tag (if a class is being used).

Or you might have set the width inline in the topic, but I would only expect that to happen on multiple pages if you're using a topic as a template for other topics and the original template has an inline style on the img tag.

At 96dpi, your image would already be quite large in the PDF.
A 600 pixel image at 96dpi would be 6.25 inches (600/96).

Are you saying it's larger than that?

I had never set any size settings (i have a img.screenshot style that puts a grey border around the graphic), but went through and double checked both via Flare and checking the CSS in Notepad. I did notice however that my PDF output was set to A4 and not letter. I made the change and was hoping that was it, since the PDF would resize the A4 to fit the Letter size when you viewed it. I created a new project from scratch to test out some graphics with and without the img.screenshot style and had the same results. Any additional ideas would be great. I've attached a graphic to try and illustrate what I am seeing.

I'm not sure why you're measuring the pixel size of the image as displayed in the PDF viewer - that's completely irrelevant.

The dpi is important though, as it is directly related to the size of the image in PDF/print. The image's dpi is the number of dots (pixels) per inch, so the image's physical size in PDF/print depends on the image's pixel size and its dpi :

image size (pixels) / dpi (pixels per inch) = image physical size (inches)

For example:
- A 600 pixel wide image set to 100dpi would be 6 inches wide on paper
- A 600 pixel wide image set to 300dpi would be 2 inches wide on paper

That's just based on the image's properties, other things in Flare can affect its size; e.g. if you have scaled the image in the topic, or set size properties on the img tag in the stylesheet.

dave is right.

How about specifying measurements in inches or cm for print output. This will make things easier.
You can keep using pixels for online or display outputs.

If you have only one image to specify, you can just specify it in the Picture Properties dialog box. If you have a whole collection or series of images you may wanna create a library of image classes like

img.toolbarmini
img.small
img.medium
img.mediumlarge
img.large
img.wide
img.fullpage
img.halfpage
