Our corporate standard for print materials is Trade Gothic LT Std Bold for headings and Gotham Book for body text (not my choice but that's what I have to live with). I need to deliver a 800-900 page PDF manual, but although outputting to a Word Printed Documentation target uses the fonts correctly, the PDF target does not (I'm not sure what it's substituting, but it may be arial). I'm using the same printdefault style sheet for both targets, so I can't figure out what might be the problem.
I tried taking the additional step of going from Word to PDF, but I lose most of my internal and index links that way, so I don't think that will be a good option. Besides, the PDF formatting comes out more cleanly; it just uses the wrong fonts.
Any ideas what I may be doing incorrectly?
Thanks.

Re: Incorrect Fonts in PDF Target
If you look at the PDF properties (File > Properties ... at least on newer versions of Acrobat), you can see what fonts are in a PDF document. I've had issues with our corporate font since it is an OpenType font that is not supported. I ended up using a utility that converted it to a Windows TrueType font, so I could produce the PDF correctly. This isn't the ideal situation, but from what I understand from the MadCap support staff until the latest .net framework is used to build Flare, OpenType will be dicey at best. Of course, fonts have never been Window strong point and always a pain compared to the Mac platform where things were much cleaner (not necessarily perfect, but easier to fix usually).tems wrote:Our corporate standard for print materials is Trade Gothic LT Std Bold for headings and Gotham Book for body text (not my choice but that's what I have to live with). Re: Incorrect Fonts in PDF Target
I suffer from the same problem as the rest; my client's OpenType font is not one that Flare (.NET) can work with for a PDF target, so I'm forced to use the approved substitution: Arial. Yuck.
Wayne, I'm intrigued that you've found a utility that would turn your OpenType font into a TrueType font. I too have tried such a utility but with no success. Pray tell, what's the utility you're using?

It's called FontLab Studio. It was a competitor to Fontographer until Adobe purchased Macromedia. Fontographer was then purchased by the FontLab group. They offered me a sweet deal to switch to FontLab from Fontographer. I use the Mac OS X version of the product, but they do make a PC version of the product. If you really want to get creative, you could even design your own typeface for your project.Nita Beck wrote:Wayne, I'm intrigued that you've found a utility that would turn your OpenType font into a TrueType font. Re: Incorrect Fonts in PDF Target
Thanks, Wayne. I'll look into it.
Nope, can't design my own fonts! I have to use my clients' corporate (proprietary) fonts, currently only available as OpenType fonts. Funny thing is, for one of these clients, their not having a TrueType version is causing problems for some of their internal groups, too. The folks who are in charge of the font say they're working on a TrueType version, but it's very low on their priority list. How hard can it be? (Maybe it *is* hard; I have no idea, not being a font designer.)
Thanks again.
