Linking to PDFs from TOC

Post by TA08 »

My aim is to be able to add a link in my WebHelp TOC to a PDF file that is contained within the same project. When the link is clicked from in the TOC the PDF opens within the frame (as topics would) rather than in a separate window.

When I try to drag & drop the PDF file in the TOC as advised by MadCap, PDF link does work when I open the file in Flare but doesn't work when I generate the build!

Can anyone help, unable to find any details on how to do this after trawling through the MadCap KB or in the Help?

Highly frustrated!

In the Properties screen for that TOC entry, go the Advanced tab, and set the "Open in Browser Frame" option to blank or parent. Blank will open a new window or tab (depending on how the user's browser is set up) and parent will replace the entire browser window (i.e., replacing your help with the PDF file). I haven't tested this feature at all, but I'm assuming it works.

Also, if you have MOTW (Mark of the Web) enabled, all links to non htm files will not work. Try disabling this if it is on.

Good point. If your help is running on the user's machine then you might want to embed the PDF in a topic instead. See this post --> http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 324#p31324

Lisa, I tried your original suggestion above but that didn't work. However I did try to embed the PDF (from the link provided) which did work but it doesn't display the full PDF only about a third. I now need to try to work how to display the full PDF. Thanks for your help, at least I am a bit further on in sorting this link.

Hobbes - thanks for the info re MOTW, I will remember that in future!
