Frame to Flare to Frame again

Post by pdxwordsmith »

I was using Flare as an HTML processor from Frame, but after the Roadshow, was inspired to work in Flare natively. Now, I'm trying to produce Frame/PDF from Flare and running into some issues.
  • In the original Frame, I had tables with headings that were rotated 90 degrees - to fit the page width. Import to Flare rotated them horizontal. How do I get them to rotate back to vertical? Alternatively, how do I get my wide tables to fit the printed page?
  • I added the ChapterNumber system variable to my Page Output in Flare, but when I build to Frame, I get this message:

    Code: Select all

C:\dev\MadCap\MadCap Projects\iTV-Manager\Content\iTV-Manager\IntroITVManager.htm: FrameMaker does not support an equivalent for the system variable, ChapterNumber. This will be removed from the output.
What I want is page numbers (and xrefs) in this format: ChapterNum-PageNum. Possible?
  • I had nested bullet lists with different characters. Import to Flare retained them, but export to Frame lost them. I now have question marks. How do I get bullet characters that Frame understands into the Autonumber for bullet lists?
  • I have a ton of warnings in my Frame build output that say:

    Code: Select all

Warning: Format auto-number commands can not be converted in FrameMaker output. Formatting of autonumbers should be done through the mc-auto-number-class. See the help for more information.
When I search the help for mc-auto-number-class, I am disappointed :-(
  • I have a few errors in my Frame build output that say:

    Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\jnelson\Local Settings\Temp\TemplateManagerRole.htm: Unresolved cross reference to: file:///C:/Documents and Settings/jnelson/Local Settings/Temp/TemplateManagerRole.htm. File may not be included in the TOC or the destination may not exist.
I think these are coming from cross-references in table footnotes. When I select the table footnote window and update the references, I get errors. But, I can't seem to get these to work. When I try to change them to valid xrefs, I get an error about the target file not being XML (no such error when I xref to the file from a topic proper). Are xrefs in footnotes supported?
  • I'm horribly disappointed by the Errors tab in the Build Progress dialog. I have messages that look like this:

    Code: Select all

Unresolved cross reference to: file:///C:/Documents and Settings/jnelson/Local Settings/Temp/TemplateEditorRole.htm. File may not be included in the TOC or the destination may not exist.	FrameMakerP1	FrameMaker Output Compiler	C:\Documents and Settings\jnelson\Local Settings\Temp\TemplateEditorRole.htm
I might be mistaken, but it looks to me like the message gives me the file that is the TARGET of the bad xref, not the source. In any case, I can't figure out how to find and correct the error (I have an inkling, given bullet 5).
  • I have some See also heads that automatically include (via autonumber) the text "See also" (h2.Head_See_Also). When I build to Frame, the first such heading appears in the Frame/PDF, but subsequent headings disappear. Might be related to bullet 4.

Something I caught during the Roadshow - I think I heard that each topic should start with an H1. Is this correct? If so, how do you get hierarchy in the Frame output? Is this done purely via position in the TOC? Is it possible that my "See also" issue is due to an H2 showing up within an H2 or H3? On input from Frame to Flare, Flare retained my h1, h2, h3 etc levels, so each topic does not start with an H1. I've always had blank entries when I search the help and I'm beginning to think it's related to this issue. Can someone shed some light?
Any and all suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Hanna

Is anyone able to rotate table headings in Flare 10? You can rotate body frames and pages, but not text in table headings. Thanks!
