PDF index page-number line breaks

Post by pdxwordsmith »

In my index, sometimes the (hyphenated) page numbers break across a line, like so:

I've tried various stylesheet tweeks with hyphenation settings, but can't seem to influence this behavior. Ideas?

This is a guess. I haven't tried this myself.

In the p.Index1, p.Index2, etc. styes, add a white-space attribute and set it to "nowrap" as in:

white-space: nowrap;

I'm not sure if that will make ALL the numbers stay together, so you'll get even weirder line breaks, or if this will make individual page numbers, as in 8-26, stay together.

You might need to edit the style sheet in Advanced view or manually directly in the internal text editor. I'm not sure you can add this attribute in Simplified view.

I hope that this at least points you in the right direction.

This sounded familiar to me, so I dug up a link to an old thread on formatting the index: index problems. Based on that discussion, I think that "white-space:nowrap" may make the text of your index entry go outside the boundaries of the table cell.

I set my index entries to use "white-space:normal". You may want to experiment with this setting to see which does the job.
