Clicking on TOC doesn't always open topic at top of page

Post by amatsumoto »

We have a curious issue happening in our WebHelp. All of the topics have a heading 1 at the top of the page, and all of them use a master page that has breadcrumbs above the heading 1.

If we go to our generated help and click on a topic in the TOC, some of the topics open where you are at the top of the page and can see the breadcrumbs and the heading 1 text, but clicking on other TOC entries opens the topic where you can see only the heading 1 text, but would have to scroll up to see the breadcrumbs.

We have looked at the source of files that behave differently, and cannot think of a reason why this is happening. It isn't like this is the index, where clicking on the index entry is going to take you to where the index keyword marker is in the source (e.g., center of a topic).

Anyone have any guesses as to why this is happening and how we can correct it?

I've seen this, but only in imported projects.

We had this with projects imported from FrameMaker. There would be a bookmark next to each heading, and the TOC entries pointed to that bookmark; which meant the topic was displayed the same way as yours are, scrolled-down to show the heading at the top.

Anyway, I would check the links in your TOC and see if they are pointing just to the topic or a bookmark in the topic; e.g. mytopic.htm or mytopic.htm#bookmark.

Yup, bookmarks were the culprit. I removed them from the TOC links and all is good.

Hello,

I had a very similar question and searches returned this topic. I use WebHelp output and have recently implemented Master Pages with breadcrumb proxies.

My question is whether or not you can insert index markers in such a way that clicking an Index entry in the Index frame of the WebHelp output would display the top of the page (including the contents of the breadcrumb proxy) instead of automatically scrolling down to the H1 as is mentioned in this topic. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks in advance,

There's nothing in Flare that would allow you to do that; clicking the index link will jump to where that index marker is located in the topic. In most cases, and especially if the marker is in the topic body, this is what you would want as it takes you to the part of the topic you're interested in. Perhaps there's a requirement to be able to add an index marker to a topic as a whole, rather than a position inside the topic.

Thank you Dave,

I did not think it was possible but I wanted to make sure I was not missing anything. I just really like the breadcrumbs as a way of letting readers know exactly where they are. So it is a little disappointing that if they use the index, they will not automatically see their whereabouts. But as you said, at least they get to the content they are looking for, which is the most important thing.

Thanks again for your reply!

If you want breadcrumbs visible all the time, it's possible to put them in a non-scrolling region at the top of the topic.
It's not something I use myself, but you can find information in Flare's help and it's been discussed on the board a few times.

Wow, thank you very much Dave! I was not aware of the nonscrolling option. I do use the Flare online help, so it should have hit me that I can always see the breadcrumbs in there. Usually I'm so focused on the content (trees) that I don't notice the presentation (forest).

Thanks again!
