Vertical text in a table header?

Post by NigelBennett »

Hi all

I'm trying to get some headers in a table to appear vertically - i.e. I want the word to be rotated by 90 deg. Is this possible? If so, can someone let me know how please. I can't find any table or text properties that do this.

I've never tried it myself, but see if this site helps --> http://codebasic.net/css-rotate-text-90-degrees/

Hi again.
We have now spent a few hours experimenting, and yes, you can use the code referenced in the linked page to rotate texts in a Flare table - thanks for the tip. However there is one point that you should be aware of:
In Flare/HTML, the space available for text in a cell appears to be linked to the horizontal width of the cell, irrespective of the text's orientation within that cell. For example, if you have several words of text in a column header and you rotate this text 90 degrees in an attempt to "save width" in the table, the column width will by default remain the same. If you then reduce the column width "manually", the text assumes it has less space and wraps to the next line, even though the cell is high enough for the text to remain on one line. This rather negates the point of rotating the text as you don't gain anything. This appears to be a problem with HTML rather than just Flare as we have tried other code with the same results. I'll report this to Flare - maybe they have a work-around or can give me some other pointers. Otherwise, thanks for your help, and if anyone has any other ideas we would love to hear them! :D

Boo, that referenced web site is long since gone now :( Any chance you still have a copy of the styles you implemented? I'd be keen to see how this was achieved.

A very quick Google gives this - don't know if it's what you're after.

Sorry Graham, when we found the problem with the text wrapping we didn't have time then to investigate further as deadlines were looming, so we dropped the case. However if this is now solved then I'm interested in hearing about it! :)

I just tried ... you have to apply the rotation to a block level element like a DIV. So I placed DIVs inside the header and then the text. No luck. So much no luck that Flare crashed  . I am out of discretionary time ... maybe another attempt after this release.
