Headings changing sizes and starting their own pages

Post by Gamepro »

Hello,

I have a simple problem I haven't been able to figure out. I import a word file containing 4 different heading styles (pretty basic, each just gets progressively smaller), and each heading starts a new topic. I want only Heading 1 to start its own page (I don't know where the option is where I can designate heading 1 to start its own page though), and the rest to just continue along normally. I check and confirm in the .htm files that each heading starts its own topic and is the correct size.

The problem comes when I build a PDF file. Heading 4 seems to randomly upgrade to a much larger font and start its own page. Heading 3 seems to randomly downgrade to a small font.

What could be causing this?

Good grief, another one I might be able to help with!

As a fellow newbie to Flare, I share your frustrations.

I suggest you go into the Stylesheet that you're using and edit the styles. You may be using just <h1> or you may have your Word style "Heading 1" showing up as a sub-class of <h1> (and the same for the other three heading levels). Others will be able to suggest ways of working and whether it's better to edit the <h1> class or the <h1.Heading1> class.

Anyway...

Click Open Master Stylesheet to open the stylesheet. On the left is (probably) a list of style classes. Scroll down a bit until you get to h1 etc. There may be a + beside it if you're using the Heading1 sub-class.
Click the + to expand the h1 group, then click Heading 1. On the right-hand window you will (probably) see a list of properties.

To edit the font, click the + beside Font, and see what font, size, style, variant etc is set up, and edit as you wish.

To force a page break before, close the Font group and look for Print Support. Open the Print Support group and set "page-break-before" to "Always".

For your other headings that don't have a page break before, you might want to set "page-break-after" to "avoid" (kind of equivalent to "keep with next" in Word). You should be able to fix the problems you have described by making those changes to the heading styles.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot. For some reason my master stylesheet just disappeared, so I had to reimport the project and made the page break changes as you described and it worked.

Do you know if when I reimport the project from word with updated edits, will it overwrite the changes I made to the headings in Flare?

I had the same heading issue. I wouldn't create a subclass for h1 though.

See my post from today: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 032#p62905 about how I fixed it my projects.

I can't answer your question about Word imports though.

Diana
