Can't delete [Index] in Word header or display my text

Post by Cecily »

I'm using Flare 6 for my first attempt at single sourcing Word and html outputs, so I'm getting to grips with page layouts and page types.

I created my project using the Sample Book template, which sets it up nicely with different sorts of pages (title page, TOC, a couple of chapters and an index).

The title page of my Word output has a StyleRef field in the header that is inserting the word "Index". I have opened the Page Layout it uses ("Sample") and the Page Type it uses ("Title") and deleted everything from the header: I couldn't see it in Flare, but it was still in the output. I then deleted the header frame, but still the same problem. I then reinstated the header frame and added my own text for the header, but although I see my text in Flare, in the output I only see "Index".

I have the same problem with the sections within the chapters (which use a different page layout), but I assume that if I can fix it in the title page, I can fix it there too.

Any ideas?

I think I figured it out. The right page for that page layout has a heading.level1 variable in it so it's inserting the contents of the first h1 it finds in the output, and the only h1 heading in the output is for the index. It just also happens to be the last topic in the output. The title page isn't the only one it shows up on -- it appears on every right page in the output.

Hi Lisa. Yes, the StyleRef is to an H1, but it's not a right page, it's a page type of Title (the page type of Right has a reference to H1 that I can see in Flare).

I'm not sure why:
  • it's picking up the H1 for the index rather than for Chapter 1 (or even Chapter 2)
  • I can't delete it - or even see it from within Flare.
The permutations of page layout and page type are so numerous that I confess I am almost tempted not to bother too much within Flare and just edit the Word output directly.

When I created a test project with that template, the only topic that was created with an h1 tag was the Index. All other topics were set to an h2 tag. Normally the heading variables use the last preceding heading that matches the variable selected, but I guess since the Index is the only one with an h1 tag, that's the one it's using.

It's not exactly in Flare. The problem is that the Word output is using section breaks, but the header and footer are linked throughout the document instead of being broken between pages. It works correctly in PDF output. There are a few other quirks with generating Word output, some of which it seems you can only fix by modifying the Word output after it's built. I think I remember seeing it mentioned somewhere in the GUI that Word doesn't support running headers and footers, but that might have been in a previous version.

For the headers and footers at least, it might just be easier to add them inside Word.
