h1.chapter - not incrementing

Post by Cecily »

I have a Flare v6 project with Word and html output that I created from the Sample Book template.

The top level topic at each level of the TOC uses the style h1.chapter. In Word and html output (though not Flare editor) chapters 1, 2, and 3 are numbered correctly. However, any other chapters I create are displayed with "Chapter 3:" prefixing the chapter title.

I have opened the topics concerned and changed the style to something else, back to h1.chapter and recompiled - to no avail, but can't see anything else to try.

How do I fix the ones I already have and ensure that new chapters work correctly from the start?

Can you post the style for your chapter class for the h1 tag? Specifically the mc-auto-number parameters.

Hi Lisa. The style is exactly as it was from the Sample Book project template supplied with Flare:

mc-auto-number-class = (not set)
mc-auto-number-format = CH:Chapter {chapnum}:
mc-auto-number-offset = 0
mc-auto-number-position = inside-head

Ok, I don't use the chapnum variable myself, but I believe in order to use it you have to make sure to designate where the chapters occur in the TOC. You do that by enabling the "start a new chapter" option in a TOC entry's Properties screen. Even if the "chapter" is going to use the same page layout as the previous chapter, you still have to enable the option and select a page layout. You need to do this because Flare doesn't automatically associate a "book" in the TOC as being a "chapter". So you have to enable this option on every topic (or book) that is the beginning of a new chapter.

Given that that is the style used by one of the supplied templates, it seems a little odd that it doesn't default to starting a new chapter, but it's easy now that I know how to fix it.

Thanks very much, Lisa.
