The situation I have right now is that I imported my word file into Flare and I had h1, h2 and h3 create their own topics. There doesn't seem to be any control over how the TOC is generated (unless somebody knows how?), so basically I get this massive TOC where all the topics are in order, but everything is on the same level, no books. Clearly this is no good for online navigation.
Looking at the auto-generate TOC feature, it can be used to convert, say, a topic that starts with h1 into a book, and have any h2 and h3 headings become separate sub-entries in that book. This is what I want, but this only works when all the headings are in the same topic.
What about with my situation, where h2 and h3 headings are separate topics? Is there any way to auto-generate the TOC and have it do the same thing? Perhaps I can do something differently in the importing phase? The only thing I can think of is to simply reimport and only have h1's create their own topics, then have each one auto-generate. But I'm pretty sure this is undesirable since the point of Flare is to not have these massive topics...
So before I spend hours and hours manually creating books and dragging and dropping all these TOC entries, does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Auto generating TOC
If your original Word document has a Word generated TOC with the levels you want, then when you import, the new Flare TOC will have the same indentation. If the Word file does not have a TOC then you get the single level list.
You might have to experiment a bit with how many levels you have showing in the original Word TOC to make sure you get the same levels in the Flare one.

Ahh. I didn't know that word's table of contents was linked to the outline TOC. I omitted word's table of contents before I imported since I was going to have Flare create one through a proxy. Thanks a lot!
Re: Auto generating TOC
Hi there
I'm just starting out with Flare, more familiar with a tool where all these things are automated so would appreciate any help.
I imported Word docs and _did_ get a TOC, but just now did not. The first time (I think) I created a project by importing a word doc. This created a toc that followed the same structure as the doc. Second time, I just imported (after creating the *.flimp, which is I guess the import rules) and no TOC. Is this correct, that it works this way? eg, TOC if importing to create a project but none if importing into an existing project?
Since I'm likely to import docs into existing projects, I suppose I should use the tip to create a TOC in the word doc before import. It seems like that will solve it, but just checking as this requires another step.
Any tips much appreciated, thx!

Re: Auto generating TOC
What version of Flare are you using? I've got the latest here (v6.1) and I always get a TOC generated, it's just the formatting levels that are different.
A TOC should be generated for every Word import, whether its a new project or extra file. If the Word document already has an internal TOC then Flare uses that as the basis for the generated TOC, otherwise it will generate a TOC that just lists the new topics in one long list all at the same level.

Re: Auto generating TOC
Thanks, I'm sorting this out now tho parts are confusing. If you import into an existing project, there's a Master TOC and the one from your import - if you create a project by importing, it creates a new TOC (and stylesheet) and overrides the Master. That seems to be the main diff, tho it's taken me ages to get this & how to import correctly!
Thanks and I'm sure I'll be showing up here!!
