Flare reimport from FrameMaker not overwriting files

Post by HeraTech »

I'm working on a client's system, FrameMaker version 9 and Flare version 6.1.

I've imported my FrameMaker book and created my Flare project files, and at this point I'm tweaking the CSS and conversion settings. Since the client is going to be continuing to author in FrameMaker after I leave, I selected the "Link Generated Files to Source Files" check box, and the "Auto-reimport before 'Generate Output'" check boxes. My problem is that now every time I generate output to view my changes, Flare creates a duplicate set of files (HTML files, CSS files, TOC, etc.). I expected that selecting these settings would 1) overwrite existing files and 2)only re-import if there had been changes in the FrameMaker files. Since I'm only tweaking import settings, the FrameMaker files haven't been altered.

So, am I misunderstanding the purpose of these "Easy Sync" settings? Or is this (as I suspect) a bug?

It's a bug. "Auto-reimport before 'Generate Output'" doesn't work very will in Flare 5/6, and as you observed creates a lot of duplicate files. Instead, clear that option, and use the manual method (this is better anyway as it gives you more control as to when you reimport.

To manually reimport:
1. Click the Reimport button (near the top-left of the import file).
2) When prompted to select the files to overwrite, click Select all.
3) Click OK to start the import. Files should be overwritten (and not duplicated) as selected in step 2.

One additional note, the auto-reimport option was never that great anyway. It only reimports when there is a time-stamp change on a FrameMaker book, not the files within that book. Quite often there can be changes to files, but no actual update to the book and Flare would not pick this up. So as I say not very reliable in terms of automatically picking up on changes to the source material.
