Microsoft HTML Compiler encountered a problem . . .
Hi all,
Previously successful compile, today I'm getting this error message: Microsoft HTML Compiler has encountered a problem and needs to close. . . .
The following is in the Error Log:
Failed to copy temporary chm file C:\HTMLHelp\CFM HTML Help_09\Output\bmcclintock\Temporary\MyHtmlHelp\Content\CFM_HTML_Help.chm to C:\HTMLHelp\FAMISWeb Wizards\Output\bmcclintock\FAMISWebHELP\Output\FAMISWebHelp\Output\MyHtmlHelp\CFM_HTML_Help.chm The process cannot access the file 'C:\HTMLHelp\CFM HTML Help_09\Output\bmcclintock\Temporary\MyHtmlHelp\Content\CFM_HTML_Help.chm' because it is being used by another process.]. Compiler
The part in red is strange. It is referring to a completely different project.
Also, all topics within 1 folder are listed with "Missing Source Link . . ." errors. They have previously compiled and "linked" just fine.
I've closed out Flare and rebooted my computer and get the same result.
I'd appreciate any help! Thanks.

Can you clarify the above statement? Does that happen in the Content Explorer? Also, all topics within 1 folder are listed with "Missing Source Link . . ." errors. They have previously compiled and "linked" just fine.
Also, do you do anything fancy in the TOC like linking to another project's TOC or merging with another CHM file?
Cheers

Re: Microsoft HTML Compiler encountered a problem . . .
I tried to attach an image of my Content Explorer, but I'm not very savvy at this and couldn't figure it out
But, to clarify my statement, I am referring to the topics in a folder in the Content Explorer. Basically it looks like this
Content
+Accounts Payable
+Budget
-General Ledger
+FGL1
+FGL2A
+FGL5 and FGL6
The topics that fall under FGL5 and FGL6 are the ones that show up in the Error Log with Missing inked source . . .
I made a couple changes: FGL5 and FGL6 used to be a longer filename and I shortened it. . . .used to be FGL5 and FGL6 - Posting Edits and Posting. I thought maybe the longer filename may be a contributor to the issue, though it hadn't prevented me before.
One thing I found interesting in the Error Long entry below:
Missing linked source file: C:\HTMLHelp\CFM HTML Help_09\Content\General Ledger\FGL5 and FGL6 - Posting Edits and Posting - Posting Edits and Posting\Contract Maintenance Window(New).htm - Posting Edits and Posting\Contract Maintenance Window Fields.htm MyHtmlHelp Compiler C:\HTMLHelp\CFM HTML Help_09\Content\General Ledger\FGL5 and FGL6 - Posting Edits and Posting\Contract Maintenance Window(New).htm
- Posting Edits and Posting appears twice, consecutively, in the string. That can't be correct, right?
When I shortened the filename and ran the compiler again, there was no change in the error log entries.
I'm not sure if it's fancy, but yes I do have a link in some of my topics to another chm file.
Thanks for taking a look.

Create a new TOC or simple TOC and see if it generates using this new TOC

Re: Microsoft HTML Compiler encountered a problem . . .
Thanks Rick, That didn't seem to work,
I'm really grasping at straws now. I tried a new target and that didn't work either.
In my error log entry:
"Generating alias file: Missing topic: /Content/General Ledger/FGL5 and FGL6/Series Posting Window.htm"
The reference to FGL5 and FGL6 is to a file I have deleted. It no longer exists in my project, unless there are hidden files somewhere that I do not see. Why would it still point to a deleted file. I updated the alias file to not contain any links to the deleted file.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Microsoft HTML Compiler encountered a problem . . .
Try opening the alias file in the Internal Text Editor and looking for the deleted file. And if you're using a header file, check that, too.

Re: Microsoft HTML Compiler encountered a problem . . .
THANKS, LISA.
I did find a reference in the alias file when I opened it in the Internal Text Editor. I deleted it and recompiled and compile was successful. YAY!!!
Though, another observation/issue? in the snip below, the reference to the Generated file (in red) containing FAMISWeb Wizards is referenceing another project altogether, not part of this project at all. Can you tell me what may be going on there? How I can keep this from happening?
The Created file (in blue) appears to be correct. what is the difference between the created and generated file?
Created c:\HTMLHelp\CFM HTML Help_09\Output\bmcclintock\Temporary\MyHtmlHelp\Content\CFM_HTML_Help.chm, 590,371 bytes
Compression decreased file by 2,211,101 bytes.
Generated ../../../../../FAMISWeb Wizards/Output/bmcclintock/FAMISWebHELP/Output/FAMISWebHelp/Output/MyHtmlHelp/CFM_HTML_Help.chmSaving result set...
Output generated in 2 minute(s) and 12 second(s).
Done

Lessons Learned
It really helpss to look at the Text Editor. I found all sorts of residual references that needed to be deleted!
Other project showing up in the Generated line?- My actual Output folder had been mapped to that file. Don't know how, but it was. Easy fix!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Did you check the target file for that output? You can specify an output file name and an output folder in the target.bmcclintock wrote:My actual Output folder had been mapped to that file. Don't know how...

Yes. That is where I found that my Output file was mapped incorrectly, in the Target file.
Now, I'm having an Internal Error: Failed to copy . . .
